Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters’a cevaben…

I would like to thank to one of my closest friends who sent her sketch and poem as a reply for Goya’s work in my blog, Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters:
‘Akıl uyuyunca
İlham gelir
Karanlıkla birlikte.
Canavarlar yeğdir
Sahte görünümlere’
Seda 2008
I have translated it as such:
‘When reason sleeps
the muse shows up
within the darkness.
Monsters are better
than fake appearances’
Well, I agree with her to some extent, especially when the muse comes into the picture. I have read quiet a lot of examples that prove the case. It is a proven fact that one can be most creative when he clears his mind and lets it flow. Einstein for example, told C.G Jung that he was mostly inspired in the mornings when he was shaving:)
Goya on the other hand, was also 100% right in fearing to loose it and become totally insane regarding his own personal experience. He was not happy in the society he lived in. In his Los Caprichos series, he condemned the ”monsters; namely the innumerable foibles and follies to be found in any civilized society, and from the common prejudices and deceitful practices which custom, ignorance, or self-interest have made usual”. The depiction of contemporary society found in Caprichos, made the series and Goya himself  a precursor to the modernist movement. That is the reason why The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters in particular attained its iconic status.
I think time proved him right to fear from the monsters the ‘modern world’ has created and reason is still the only medium to be used to find the right way.
Besides, isn’t it the reason that alerts us for fake appearences?
